BUK-SU;Reflection

'BUK-SU' is one of Korea's traditional cultural heritages, another term for 'Jangseung.'It marks the boundaries of new places, such as village entrances, serving as a guardian deity that prevents negative energies from entering. It also represents the common faces of the villagers of its time. I believed it encompasses the past, present, and future of the local community, holding their hopes.

During the challenging times of COVID-19, when going out was difficult, I often watched traditional cultural documentaries and learned about 'BUK-SU.' Through this, I realized that 'BUK-SU' could reflect not only myself but also humanity facing global hardships. Villagers probably wished for a 'BUK-SU' that resembled themselves. I wanted to share the idea that something reflecting today's shared fears and hopes could be the 'BUK-SU' of our time, and I wanted to bring this idea into the present day. To reflect this well, I used the painting technique of silvering to create reflective surfaces.

'벅수'는 우리 나라의 전통 문화유산 중 하나로, '장승'의 다른 용어다. 마을 입구와 같은 새로운 장소의 경계를 내며, 이는 부정 에너지가 들어오는 것을 막는 수호 신이자 그 시대 마을 사람들의 일반적인 얼굴을 대표한다. 이것은 지역 커뮤니티의 과거, 현재 및 미래를 아우르며 그들의 희망을 담고있다고 생각했다. 코로나19로 인해 외출이 어려운 시기에, 나는 종종 보는 전통 문화 다큐멘터리에서 '벅수'를 알게 되었는데, 이 '벅수'를 통해 나는 나 자신의 반영 뿐만아니라 전 세계적인 어려움에 직면한 인류의 모습을 투영할수 있다고 생각했다. 마을사람들은 아마도 자신과 닮은 '벅수'에 대한 소망을 기원했을 것이다. 오늘날 사람들이 공유하는 두려움과 희망을 반영하는 무언가도 오늘의 '벅수'가 될 수 있을 것 같아 이 생각을 다른 이들과 공유하고 현시대에 끌어 드리고 싶었다. 그것을 잘 반영할수있는 소재가 반사될수 있는 Silvering 기법을 회화적으로 이용하여 반영하고자 하였다.
