Seaside Centerpiece(2020)

This series was commenced during the difficult and isolated times of the global pandemic (COVID-19), to overcome the challenges with a positive mindset. The images chosen were taken while traveling within Korea before the pandemic, of the landscapes which gave me a peaceful mind. The landscapes are captured purely and clearly through the different levels of shade in Ottchil (Korean lacquer). 

I went to Jeju Island for a silence trip, in the midst of summer in August 2018. After ascetically tracking in silence along the Olle Trail in August, amid the intense humidity and scorching heat, I sat down by an unknown sea. Looking into the green waters and the wave foam that would crush against the red rock, ascending and descending, all my thoughts seemed to have dissolved.

I wish that the ‘serenity’ and ‘consolation’ I felt at [a Jeju seaside midst of summer] to be conveyed in your life through the objet.

The clarity and freshness of the green ocean and the wave foam that gently washed up to the boundaries of the red rocks are expressed by applying thin layers of Ottchil (Korean lacquer).

글로벌 팬데믹 (COVID19) 상황에서 고립되었던 어려운 시기에 긍정적으로 이겨내고자 진행했던 시리즈이다. 팬대믹 이전에 국내여행 중 마음의 평안을 주었던 풍경을 선정하여 옻칠의 농담(濃淡)을 통해 맑고 투명하게 담은 시리즈다.

 2018년도 8월 한여름 제주도로 묵언여행을 떠났을 때이다. 8월의 올레 길을 따라 걷다보면 찌는 듯한 더위와 습함을 느끼며 수행하듯 묵묵히 걷다 마주한 이름 모를 해안가에 앉았다. 습기 가득 머금은 녹푸른 바닷물과 붉은 암석에 부딧혀 일어났다 사라지는 파도 거품을 보고 있노라면 내 상념을 모두 사라지는듯했다.

[한 여름 제주 바닷가]에서 느꼈던 ‘고요함’과 ‘위로’가, 오브제를 통해 삶속에서 느껴지길 바란다.

녹푸른 바닷물과 붉은 암석의 경계선에서 잔잔하게 나타나는 파도 거품은 옻칠을 얇게 올려 투명함과 청량함을 표현하였다.
